Pinehurst Area

The surrounding Sandhills area is recognized as one of the top three golf destinations in the world. There are more than 30 area courses in the area and Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen Region is home to 10 of the top 20 North Carolina Golf Courses as well as world class tennis and spa facilities, exquisite dining options, and luxurious accommodations.

The Sandhills offers the best of small town charm and metropolitan amenities and though Golf is a way of life, visitors and residents enjoy the arts, history, botanical gardens, community festivals and unique village shops, all which combine to make the Sandhills a very special place. Known for its sandy soil and gently rolling hills, the region's mild climate makes outdoor activities a year-round possibility. From the Stoneybrook Steeplechase and the PGA Golf Tour to the Tour-de-Moore bicycling race, there's always something to do.

Remarkably, this small town carved from the pine barrens of eastern North Carolina by a Boston business man has been associated worldwide with the game of golf for nearly a century. Originally founded as a winter resort for New Englanders, James Walker Tufts, the founder, soon recognized the potential of the game and grew his resort into the prestigious golfing destination it now is. Long able to attract the top names of the sport, Pinehurst continues that tradition when the Pinehurst resort was picked to host the PGA and LPGA open Championships in 2014, its third in 15 years. The revered North Carolina resort has hosted eight USGA championships, including the U.S. Opens in 1999 and 2005.

Although golf is the leading reason to visit the Sandhills area, the adjacent towns of Pinehurst, Southern Pines, and Aberdeen do offer a few other diversions. Primarily those would be in line with the generally quiet, genteel peace that settles on the area which was designed, first and foremost, to provide an escape.
